Santa Maria – Azores

It’s the southerly most island of the Azores archipelago and very unspoilt. It is gaining in popularity both with the Portuguese buying holiday properties as well as with hikers looking for something a little different. I visited in late May 2025 and found it very quiet. The marina on the south coast has limited space as the third pontoon was destroyed in the winter of 24/25. With the prevailing winds of the summer coming from the north, it is well protected. But winter SW storms can be destructive. Alternatively, you could anchor in the bay of sand with some rock, to the east of marina.  In the town above the marina I discovered a good supermarket and a selection of restaurants.  For transport your options are to rent a car, as I did, or you could cover much of the island by bike.
