LEVITHA

The island of Levitha is a curious destination. It is tempting to say it lies in the middle off nowhere, although for yachties it forms a convenient stopping off point. In our case we were heading east to west from Marmaris to Lavrion and the anchorage was a great spot to stop between Kalymnos and  Amorgos. There were rumours of a restaurant which seemed improbable given the remoteness. However the presence of some laid moorings gave hope and these turned out to have been laid by the enterprising Kamposos family who are the island’s only occupants. They live on a small farmstead and in the summer run an alfresco restaurant at their home. The food is simple, fresh and tasty; we loved the grilled barracuda! Chatting to the family we found it had been there for generations thanks to the presence of good fresh water from a natural bore hole that not only provided drinking water but also irrigated small garden crops. You have got to admire the family’s staying power and entrepreneurialism!
