Elba and Capraia (Capraia)
About 20 NM from Elba away but another world, Capraia is definitely worth visiting if you are sailing in this area. Forged from volcanic rock it is just over 7 sq. miles, 1800 hectares, with a highest peak of 466 meters. The harbour has very limited space and does not welcome large yachts. In the summer it’s a bit smelly, so you are much better securing to the unusual set of anchoring buoys just outside the harbour where someone will assist you to tie up. Go slowly as it is quite shallow in places. (Dragon II draws 1.8m.) Alternatively, you can anchor close by. I visited with accompanying hound, Grimmie, in June 2023 finding it quiet but very hot and we were foolish enough to tackle the highest peak. The views from the top took in the entirety of this petite island. Bizarely, close to the top there was small lake. Grimmie didn’t stop to question where the water came from and plunged in for a swim. His drenched coat kept him cool on the long walk down while I was left sweating buckets.
An easier short walk is up to Fort San Giorgio , just above the harbour, that dates from 1540 and the surrounding old town. The Brits briefly occupied the island in Nelson’s time. Today there are a handful of shops and restaurants to provide what you are likely to need for a short stop over.
